Mr. Vaughan is a principal in the Colorado
Springs office. He began his practice in 1980 as the law clerk for
Colorado Court of Appeals Chief Judge David Enoch. Following that
clerkship, Mr. Vaughan joined a large insurance defense firm where his
practice emphasized general litigation defense and the defense of public
entities and their employees. He left that firm in 1992 to begin his
current practice. Mr. Vaughan's practice continues to emphasize general litigation defense and the
defense of public entities and their employees. His practice also
emphasizes employment liability defense of both private and public entity
employers. |

Mr. Vaughan’s general litigation defense experience includes the litigation and trial of a wide range of personal injury and other tort claims arising from automobile accidents, home and business premises accidents, construction accidents and defects, environmental claims, assaults, and defamation. In addition, Mr. Vaughan provides legal services in the areas of insurance coverage and bad faith matters. Mr. Vaughan’s public entity defense experience includes the litigation and trial of general tort claims and claims of constitutional violations brought against public entities and their employees in such areas as police and firefighter liability, emergency vehicle driver liability, prisoner claims including claims of conditions of confinement, public school liability, zoning, and land use. Mr. Vaughan also works with a number of private providers and contractors of private security and detentions services. Mr. Vaughan’s practice also emphasizes the defense of employment-related lawsuits on behalf of both public entity and private employers. Mr. Vaughan has appeared before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, and federal and state courts on claims brought pursuant to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), and the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA). Additionally, Mr. Vaughan provides consultation for a number of public entities on a variety of employment matters. Mr. Vaughan also provides representation and consulting to professionals regarding matters or claims of violations of the standards of professional conduct. Mr. Vaughan is a member of the American, Colorado, and El Paso County Bar Associations as well as the Colorado Defense Lawyers Association and the Defense Research Institute. Mr. Vaughan is a past member of the El Paso County Inter-Professional Committee and the Colorado Defense Lawyers Amicus Curiae Committee. Mr. Vaughan has section memberships with the American Bar Association's Tort Trial & Insurance Practice, Litigation, and State & Local Government Law Sections. Mr. Vaughan has given numerous lectures in continuing legal education programs on subjects such as public entity liability and immunity, civil discovery practice, ethics, polygraph law, and insurance bad faith. |
