David R. DeMuroDavid R. DeMuro

Mr. DeMuro is a principal in the Denver office. Mr. DeMuro has practiced in the field of civil litigation since 1976. In 1983, after seven years in private practice representing business entities in commercial and employment cases, he became the first assistant attorney general in charge of the Corrections-Institutions-Public Safety unit in the Colorado Attorney General's Office. For more than two years, Mr. DeMuro worked as the unit's lead trial attorney and supervised the unit's other attorneys in defending numerous civil rights claims, including prisoner litigation. He also worked on the defense of state agencies and officers on liability and employment discrimination claims. 

Since leaving the Attorney General's Office in 1985, Mr. DeMuro returned to his private civil litigation practice. He has represented a number of private and public entities and insurers and their insureds. Mr. DeMuro has extensive trial experience in both state and federal district courts. He has tried an estimated 80 cases and appeared at hundreds of hearings. He also has a considerable amount of appellate experience and has personally conducted oral argument in more than 30 state and federal appeals. 

Mr. DeMuro has represented Pinnacol Assurance on a number of trial court and appellate court matters. This work included serving as one of the lead trial attorneys for Pinnacol Assurance in the June 1993 trial where the 1991 reform of the workers' compensation statute was successfully defended against numerous constitutional attacks by claimant groups. He has represented Pinnacol for more than 20 years, including the defense of bad faith claims. Mr. DeMuro has also worked with lawyers in our Colorado Springs office on numerous cases involving tort, employment, contract, and civil rights claims brought against corporate and governmental clients. 

Mr. DeMuro has extensive experience in the defense of employment-related claims throughout his career. He has defended numerous employment discrimination claims brought under Title VII, including claims before administrative agencies. Finally, Mr. DeMuro has handled a variety of other employment-related claims such as contract claims and claims brought pursuant to the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Mr. DeMuro also litigates cases in the areas of insurance coverage and commercial matters. 

Mr. DeMuro is well known for his technical expertise in the field of civil litigation. He is the author of a standard treatise, Colorado Civil Trial Practice (West Publ. 2d ed. 2001 and Supp.), and numerous articles including the article on civil procedure in the Annual Survey of Colorado Law each year from 1990-2000. He has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Denver College of Law where he has taught civil procedure courses. Mr. DeMuro has also given approximately 25 lectures in continuing legal education programs on subjects such as procedure, evidence, and ethical issues in litigation. 

Mr. DeMuro has been actively involved in writing and revising many of the rules governing civil litigation. He has served since 1986 on the Colorado Supreme Court's Committee on the Rules of Civil Procedure where he chairs a standing subcommittee that reviews changes in the federal rules for possible adoption in Colorado. Mr. DeMuro also served from 1992-1994 on the Supreme Court's Ad Hoc Committee on Discovery and Case Management which wrote the pretrial, disclosure, and discovery rules which took effect for cases filed since January 1, 1995. In 2000, Mr. DeMuro was appointed as the first chairman of a new advisory committee of the Colorado Supreme Court on the Colorado Rules of Evidence. He served as chairman until 2014 and continues to serve on the committee. 

Mr. DeMuro is a member of the American, Colorado, and Denver Bar Associations as well as the Colorado Defense Lawyers Association, the Defense Research Institute, and the Claims & Litigation Management Alliance f/k/a Council on Litigation Management.
